Fig. 1 Cherry Makita install view_small
An installation photo of artist Jason Rhoades’s “Garage Renovation New York (CHERRY Makita)” from 2013, at the Institute of Contemporary Art University of Pennsylvania. A gallery-sized container with three interior walls stands open to the viewer; at the center, an oily, hulking, dripping V-8 engine sends its tubes and pipes out into the space, resembling a mechanical octopus. The engine is lit by a single florescent light fixture that hangs above, and is surrounded by building materials and other detritus.
The garage is made from a collage of sheetrock, foam core, tin foil, cardboard, Q-tips, and popsicle sticks.
