Ethiopian Monarch, Recto and Verso, 1600px

Ethiopian Monarch, Recto and Verso

Recto and verso of a 1902 photograph. Left: Recto, shows a circular black-and-white photographic portrait of a dark-skinned man with a bare chest and voluminous striped fabric draped around his shoulders and waist. The figure is frontal facing and looks downward, perhaps captured mid-blink. His left hand is raised and touches his bare torso; his right hand is lifted to chest height and grips what appears to be a sword or spear. A strip of fabric is wrapped around the crown of his head. The photograph is set inside a black rectangle on a sage green background. Right: Verso, shows the back of the image, inscribed with illegible cursive handwriting, and grey sections where the paper has torn away.
