Open Score

A black and white photograph of Robert Rauschenberg’s performance artwork called Open Score, which was part of 9 Evenings: Theatre & Engineering, in October 1966. An indoor tennis court is viewed from the stands, lit by bright stadium lights. The tennis game, played by Frank Stella and Mimi Kanarek, is watched by a handful of onlookers. Each time the ball was hit, a loud “bong” was heard throughout the Armory and a light went out. The game continued until complete darkness.
