Installation view of Adventures of the Black Square: Abstract Art and Society 1915 – 2015

An installation photo of “Adventures of the Black Square: Abstract Art and Society 1915 – 2015,” an exhibition at held at the Whitechapel Gallery, London in 2015. In room with bright white walls and light oak wood floors, a variety of artwork in different media are on display. At left, a tall rectangular plank and small flat disc , both painted bright blue, lean against the wall. In the central foreground, two silver sculptures resembling metal origami sit atop white plinths, encased in clear plexiglass cases. These sculptures, called “Bicho” are by Brazilian artist Lygia Clark, and are meant to be held and manipulated by viewers. In the background, on perpendicular walls, hang framed works on paper and geometric reliefs, respectively.
