Joan Mitchell in her Vétheuil studio

A photo of Joan Mitchell in her Vétheuil studio

A photo of Joan Mitchell in her Vétheuil studio, taken in August 1983. Mitchell, who leans against a wooden stool in front of two large paintings, is a light-skinned woman with shoulder-length black hair. She wears jeans, sneakers, a long-sleeve denim top, and rectangular glasses. In her proper right hand she holds a cigarette, while her proper left hand is perched on her hip. She looks directly at the camera. To her left, canvases of various sizes are leaning in layers against the wall; the paintings behind Mitchell are large and abstract, made with broad vigorous strokes of blue and green and pink paint.
