A still from a black and white 16mm silent film called “Magical Consciousness”, 2010, by Runa Islam. A widescreen shot shows vertical bands that alternate between illumination and shadow, light and dark. Although it cannot be made out from this image, the bands are created by a gilded back of a six-panel, sixteenth-century Japanese folding screen that is being fully opened and refolded over the course of 8 minutes and 22 seconds.
